Chain Reaction Strategy: 9 Tips to Win More Games
Chain Reaction punishes optimism. Every one of these tips is a way of asking the same question before you tap: what does my opponent do next?
1. Corners first, then edges
A corner bursts at two marbles and can only be attacked from two cells. An edge bursts at three and has three attackers. The centre bursts at four and is exposed on all sides. Early in the game, cheap and safe beats central. Details in Opening Moves.
2. Count before you load
A loaded cell is one marble short of bursting. Before you add a marble, look at each enemy neighbour: if any of them is loaded, your opponent bursts it next turn and takes your cell โ and everything it was about to capture. Placing next to a loaded enemy cell is the most common losing move.
3. Never load a cell your opponent can reach first
The reverse of tip 2. A loaded cell of yours is a gift if an enemy loaded cell touches it. Keep your springs away from theirs, or make sure yours fire first.
4. Build chains, not piles
Three loaded cells in a row detonate together and sweep everything around them. Three loaded cells scattered across the board are three separate targets. Connect before you fire.
5. Tempo is a resource
Every marble you place is a half-step towards bursting. If both players are building, the one who is forced to act first โ because they ran out of safe cells โ usually loses. Keep a few harmless cells in reserve so you are never the one who has to break the standoff.
6. Capture to reset, not to gain
Capturing a loaded enemy cell gives you a loaded cell of your own. That is only good if it cannot be recaptured immediately. Ask what the board looks like after their reply, not after your move.
7. Marble count lies
Being ahead 25 marbles to 10 means little if your 25 are sitting in loaded cells next to one enemy spring. Judge the position by who fires first, not by the score.
8. Fill the edges late
Edges connect corners to the centre. A loaded edge chain is the usual delivery route for a winning cascade โ so building it too early just shows your opponent where to attack.
9. Against the AI, be boring
The Expert in PlayCascade is a search-based opponent: it sees tactical shots several moves deep. It does not get bored, but it does get starved. Deny corners, keep everything one marble below loaded and wait for it to overextend. More in Beat the AI.
Quick answers
What is the single most important habit?
Counting enemy loaded cells next to the cell you are about to fill. It prevents most losses on its own.
Does strategy change on bigger boards?
Yes โ 8ร10 rewards slow chain-building and tempo play far more than 6ร6, where tactics dominate. See the board size guide.
