How Long Does a Game of Chain Reaction Take?

Short enough for a coffee, long enough to think. Here is what to expect from a game of Chain Reaction depending on board, opponent and how carefully you count.

Typical durations

Boardvs Easy AIvs Expert AITwo humans
6×62–4 min4–8 min3–6 min
8×84–6 min8–12 min6–12 min
8×105–8 min10–15 min10–20 min

These are rough figures from play, not laws. Two cautious players on 8×10 can sit in a standoff for a long time; two reckless ones on 6×6 are done in ninety seconds.

Why games end suddenly

Chain Reaction does not wind down – it detonates. The board fills with nearly-full cells until one of them is touched, and then one cascade decides everything. That is why the move count is a poor predictor: the first twenty moves take ten seconds each, and the twenty-first takes two minutes of counting. See Strategy Tips on tempo.

What makes games longer

What makes games shorter

Fitting it in

A 6×6 game is a queue game or a commute game. 8×10 between two people is an after-dinner game. Auto-save means you can close the app in the middle of either and resume later without losing the position.

Quick answers

Can a game end in a draw?

No. The board is finite and every burst reduces the marbles in the bursting cell, so every cascade settles and someone eventually runs out of marbles.

What is the shortest possible game?

A few moves, if one player stacks a corner and the other places next to it. It will not happen against a careful opponent.
