The 7 Best Two-Player Games on One iPhone
"Two-player" on the App Store usually means two phones and an internet connection. These seven work with one iPhone on the table between you โ no second device, no account, no waiting for a match.
Two kinds of same-phone games
Pass-and-play games are turn-based: one person moves, hands the phone over, the other moves. They work on any screen size and suit thinking games. Split-screen games put both players on the phone at once, each holding one end. They are fast and loud and are far better on an iPad than on a 6-inch screen. The list below leans towards pass-and-play, because that is what an iPhone is good at.
The seven
- PlayCascade โ the chain-reaction game. Three rules, three-minute games on 6ร6, and comebacks that make the loser demand a rematch. Free, offline, no ads. Rules in Rules.
- Chess โ almost every chess app offers a local two-player board. Pick one without ads between moves; the better free apps keep local play free.
- Ticket to Ride โ the digital version of the train board game has pass-and-play on one device. A match takes 20โ30 minutes, so it is a sofa game rather than a queue game.
- The Battle of Polytopia โ a compact 4X strategy game with pass-and-play. Longer sessions, more rules, excellent on a quiet evening.
- Words With Friends โ the Scrabble-style word game has a pass-and-play mode and works on any screen.
- Othello / Reversi โ several free apps offer a local two-player mode. Slower and more positional than Chain Reaction; compare them in Games Like Othello.
- Duel Otters โ a split-screen collection of mini-duels for when you want thirty seconds of chaos rather than ten minutes of thought.
What to look for
- Local mode works offline. Some "pass and play" modes quietly require a sign-in. Test it in airplane mode once.
- No ads between turns. An interstitial every time the phone changes hands kills the mood. See Games Without Ads.
- Readable from both sides. Turn-based games should not depend on which way the phone is facing.
- Short rounds. Five-minute games get played; forty-minute games get postponed.
For couples and families
If the two players are a couple, see Games for Couples; if one of them is eight years old, Kids & Families covers what to avoid.
Quick answers
Do both players need the app?
No. For same-phone play only the phone owner needs it installed.
Which is best for a quick game?
PlayCascade on 6ร6 or a mini-duel like Duel Otters: both finish in under five minutes.
