What Is Kaskade? The Board Game Behind PlayCascade

Kaskade โ€“ "cascade" โ€“ is simply the name under which the chain-reaction game is known in German. It describes the game better than most names do.

One mechanic, many names

The game appears under several titles: Chain Reaction on Android and in browser versions, Kaskade in German, and various others on home computers since the 1980s. The mechanic is always the same: cells have a capacity, a full cell overflows into its neighbours, overflowing converts enemy pieces, and overflows chain. It belongs to the same broad family as Othello, Go and Hex โ€“ two-player abstract games with perfect information and no luck โ€“ but it is the only one of them where a single move routinely rewrites the whole board.

The rules, briefly

Players alternate adding a marble to an empty or own cell. A cell bursts when it holds as many marbles as it has neighbours (2, 3 or 4), sending one marble to each neighbour and converting them. Bursts chain. Whoever eliminates the other player's marbles wins. The long version is in Rules.

Why it is worth taking seriously as a strategy game

The rules are trivial, but the position is not: every nearly-full cell is stored energy, and the value of a move depends on chains several steps away. There is a real opening theory (Opening Moves), real tempo play and a clear skill ladder โ€“ a player who counts threats beats one who does not, every time. Being ahead in material means little, which keeps games tense to the last move.

PlayCascade's implementation

PlayCascade is a native iOS version of the two-player game. It adds what a physical set cannot: an AI opponent with four levels, animated cascades you can step through one overflow at a time, auto-save, statistics and six visual themes. Board sizes are 6ร—6, 8ร—8 and 8ร—10 (Board Sizes). It is free, works offline and has no ads; the Hard and Expert AI, the larger boards and all themes are a one-time purchase.

Quick answers

Is Kaskade the same as Chain Reaction?

Yes โ€“ same rules, different language. PlayCascade uses "Kaskade" in German and "Chain Reaction" in English.

Is there a physical version?

The game is almost always played digitally, because resolving long cascades by hand is slow and error-prone.
