Good iPhone Games Without a Subscription
A game you play for years should cost what a game costs – once. Here is how to tell a one-time purchase from a weekly plan before you tap "Get".
How to recognise a subscription game
- The in-app purchase list shows "weekly", "monthly" or "yearly" items, often with a "3-day free trial".
- The first screen after install is a paywall with a timer.
- Core content – levels, difficulty, the second half of the game – sits behind the plan rather than cosmetic extras.
- Reviews mention being charged after a trial.
None of that makes a game bad, but it changes what you own: with a subscription, nothing.
Why one-time purchases suit strategy games
Strategy games do not produce new content every week; they produce the same board and better opponents. There is nothing to subscribe *to*. A fair model is: free to learn, one payment to unlock the rest, forever. That is the model chess and Go apps have used for years and the one PlayCascade uses (Games Without Ads covers the ads side).
What Pro includes
| Free | Pro (one-time purchase) |
|---|---|
| 6×6 board | 8×8 and 8×10 boards |
| Easy and Medium AI | Hard and Expert AI |
| Two-player on one phone | – (already free) |
| Galaxy theme | All six themes, including future ones |
| Statistics, tutorial, auto-save | – (already free) |
The purchase is tied to your Apple ID, restores on a new iPhone from the app's settings and never renews. Board sizes are compared in Board Sizes.
Where to look
Indie strategy games, paid puzzle games and classic board game ports are the reliable categories. Filter the App Store's "Top Paid" strategy list for games with no in-app purchases, or free games with a single unlock. For a genre overview, see Abstract Strategy Games; for offline requirements, Offline Strategy Games.
