The Best Abstract Strategy Games for iPhone
Abstract strategy games are the ones where you cannot blame the dice. Everything that happens on the board is a consequence of a decision โ yours or the other player's.
What counts as abstract strategy
Two players (usually), perfect information, no randomness, and a theme thin enough to ignore. Chess and Go are the ancestors; modern designs like Hive, Onitama and Santorini have joined them. The genre travels well to phones because the games are small, turn-based and work with an AI.
The list
- Chess โ the obvious first install. Choose an app whose local play and basic AI are free.
- Go โ the deepest game on the list; 9ร9 boards and a weak AI level make it approachable on a phone.
- Hive โ chess-like pieces that build the board as they are placed. On iPhone it is available through dedicated apps and online board-game platforms.
- Onitama โ five pieces, five movement cards that rotate between players. Fifteen-minute games with real depth.
- Santorini โ build and climb; the god powers add variety without adding luck. A polished iOS version exists.
- Othello / Reversi โ line captures and permanent corners; see Games Like Othello.
- PlayCascade (Chain Reaction) โ marbles, capacities, overflows. The only game here where one move routinely flips the majority of the board, which makes it the fastest and most dramatic of the set. Free, offline, with a four-level AI and local two-player mode.
How to choose
- Session length. Chess and Go can run long; Onitama, Othello and PlayCascade on 6ร6 are under ten minutes. See Game Length.
- AI quality. A good AI ladder matters more than online play if you mostly play alone. PlayCascade's Expert is a search-based opponent that varies its play (Beat the AI).
- Local two-player. Most of these support pass-and-play; check before buying (Pass-and-Play).
- Business model. Prefer one-time purchases over subscriptions for games you will play for years (No Subscription).
Why Chain Reaction belongs in the genre
It is sometimes filed under "casual" because the rules are so short. The play is not casual: corners, tempo, counting threats and chain construction are the same skills Othello and Go reward, compressed into five-minute games. If you want the overview, start with Chain Reaction Game.
