Brain Games for Adults That Are Actually Strategy Games
Most "brain training" apps are reaction tests with a subscription. If you want to think harder, play a game that punishes not thinking โ against a person or a decent AI.
What a strategy game trains
- Working memory โ holding a board state and two possible replies in your head.
- Planning โ choosing a move for what it enables three turns later.
- Impulse control โ not taking the capture that loses the game.
- Error review โ finding the move that actually lost, not the one that looked bad.
Abstract games deliver all four because nothing else is going on: no story, no dice, no timer.
Games that do it well
- Chess โ the benchmark. Deep, but the first months are mostly memorising openings.
- Go โ the deepest; 9ร9 boards make it playable on a phone.
- Othello โ quick and positional (Games Like Othello).
- Chain Reaction (PlayCascade) โ rules in one sentence, so all the effort goes into reading the position: counting loaded cells, judging tempo and seeing the cascade before you trigger it. Five-minute games mean you get many repetitions of the same decision. The Expert AI gives you a sparring partner that never tires (Beat the AI).
A ten-minute routine
- One 6ร6 game against the current AI level you lose to about half the time.
- If you lost, replay the final cascade step by step and name the mistake out loud.
- Second game, same level, applying the correction.
- Move up a level when you win three in a row; move up a board size when the level stops surprising you (Board Sizes).
That is deliberate practice, which is the part the "brain training" marketing leaves out.
Why no ads matters here too
Concentration is the point. A game that interrupts you between moves is working against its own purpose; choose games that are funded once (No Subscription). For the full genre, see Abstract Strategy Games.
Quick answers
Do strategy games make you smarter?
They make you better at the game and at the specific skills it uses. Claims beyond that are marketing, not evidence.
Is five minutes a day enough?
For getting better at the game, yes โ especially with the replay habit. One careful game beats five careless ones.
